Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Scaling and polishing, often referred to as a “clean and polish,” is a professional dental cleaning procedure that removes plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from your teeth.

  • Scaling: This involves using ultrasonic scalers or manual tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup from above and below the gum line. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth, while tartar is hardened plaque that brushing alone can’t remove.
  • Polishing: After scaling, a special paste and polishing tool are used to buff and smooth the surface of your teeth, removing minor surface stains and leaving them feeling clean and fresh.

The procedure is generally painless, though you may experience some slight discomfort or gum bleeding. Your dentist will use local anesthesia if needed. You can also expect a light scraping sensation during scaling and a slight gritty feeling during polishing. The entire procedure usually takes about 30-45 minutes.

This is merely a myth. Teeth and gums become healthier after a dental cleaning. However, mild sensitivity and soreness can be sensed after the treatment.

Although there are no major side effects of a dental cleaning, some patients may feel slight sensitivity and gum soreness. Both of these are temporary and you will feel better within few days.
